At1: Critical Appraisal A written report (1500 words +/- 10%) plus references from peer-reviewed and grey literature (these as well as the in-text citations are not included in the word count).
Students are given a series of three (3) contemporary health-related topics within a relevant setting and need to select one (1) as a focus. These are:
1. Improving body image and/or self-esteem through social media (online) initiatives.
2. Reducing the number of homeless within local communities.
3. Improving mental health in school settings.
Students are instructed to conduct a small review to research their topic and analyse the extant (main/key/prominent) literature to identify:
a) principal programs that have been implemented to address the topic (if there is too much information, you can always narrow it down by considering a sub-group, such as prevalence among a particular minority group, for example).
b) critically appraise the gathered information from evaluations to determine which implementation strategies were most successful and why. It is suggested students draw on appraisal checklists – such as the CASP suite of checklists to assist their search and critical appraisal: CASP checklist link. As a conclusion, students should nominate which programs or initiatives deserve to funding and receive ongoing support. In other words, which program(s) or initiative(s) appear to be the most effective when all evidence is considered.
Be sure to provide a high standard of document management, written communication and presentation (including accurate referencing and citation styles). Include a reference list with at least 10 references – either directly citing the programs relevant to the critical appraisal, or also incorporating references associated with the health topic itself.
Also be sure to include a title page with student name, number, referencing style (APA) and word count. Note that APA is now the preferred style (even though some documents might appear to give the option with Harvard - this is a new initiative).
Further details on how to successfully complete this task will be provided in seminars.
