1) Imagine you are giving a speech where you wish to persuade your audience to adopt a dog or cat rather than buy. Which of Maslow's needs do you think you could tap into to make your case stronger? If I was giving a speech to persuade my audience to adopt a dog or cat rather than buy. I would use love and belonging out of the Maslow's hierarchy because each one of these animals needs your love, and these animals want to know they care deeply about them. I would explain to my audience that each one of these animals has feelings, and has been through so much and is looking for a home where they will be loved and will be well taken care of. I would tell them these animals have feelings and need a second chance to find a home with a family that will love them and show them they life will be different.

I'm sure my colleague's answers will be around the same as mine but I would have to say that I would use, well, all of them and I will be going from top to bottom describing what exactly I mean. For the first one, we have, self-actualization and I say this because as described by the video it is an "expression of creativity, a lack of prejudice and moral comfort", which adopting an animal can most definitely do because when you buy a dog they are well behaved and disciplined whilst if you adopt a dog it is filled with joy, happiness, and overall a flippant behavior which has causation for all three of those points. The second need is esteem, the esteem need is described as having a strive for respect from not only ourselves but from others as well and from personal experience, I have met many people where adopting a little furry friend has boosted their esteem through the roof because they not only gain love form the dog but also learn from the dog that there is more to life than looks and getting approval from people. The third esteem is feeling of love and belonging which is very self-explanatory in what it means but as for the dog perspective they are known for being the most loving pets in the world offering companionship for the rest of their short lives which many people need seeing as sometimes people can be overwhelming. As for the fourth need, we see safety and of course, you are wondering how an animal is involved with the safety need but it is right in front of you which is that of resources and shelter. Many times we see the homeless having nothing but the clothes on their back and their trusty dog which even for non-homeless the dog is an essential part of that. The final need we are looking at is physiological which mentions sleeping and breathing which many people have a hard time with whether it be due to anxiety and high stress. Having a companion at your side has proven to relieve stress and keep you calm and a great proof of that is service dogs, a lot of times for service dogs that is their main objective which is to help their owner breathe and be more relaxed. All five of these are proof that they are like Maslow says, "these hierarchies were interrelated rather than sharply separated," and though you can use one without the other you can definitely use all 5 in harmony.
