Of the many debates and arguments presented in Journal 1, I find the debate on the
impact that strict immigration laws and policies have on the host country, such as the United
States, to be the most compelling. The debate is more relevant in the US today than it was
before Trump got to power because of the many caps that were implemented during his
tenure, toughening the ability that immigrants had to come into the US and the corresponding
fears that existing immigrants had as they faced possible deportation if they could not
manage to meet these policies many of which were tough to meet in totality. In the latest US
election, immigration policies took centre stage for presidential aspirants, especially Biden
promising Americans to review these policies to ease them up and be more accommodating
for immigrants. In this respective argument, I would argue that toughening immigration
policies and laws have had adverse effects for America, considering previous immigration
policies allowed more immigrants in who fueled the US economy, generated sufficient labour
for the US industry and has grown the tech and medical research sector considering many of
the immigrants are skilled in these areas.
Opposing views in this debate cite the possibility of increasing security threats to the
countries, especially when immigrants from fragile states are allowed into the country
without much scrutiny. Some also cite that more immigrants flooding the labour sector mean
that factor prices such as wages and remunerations would be affected because intended
labour is more available (Garcia-Zamor, 2018). While the two opposing positions are equally
significant and compelling, they fail to consider and assess these downsides alongside the
positive impacts that having more immigrants into the country would have. In any scenario,
after assessing the positive and negative outcomes, one can arrive at compelling conclusions.JOURNAL 2 3
Primarily, having more flexible immigration policies would mean higher chances of
immigrants coming into the US. Immigrants then will power up the US economy. Many of
these immigrants enter the labour sector, where they either work or create employment
opportunities for other Americans. In the process, the economy grows. Also, the economy
depends on associations between demand and supply. The higher the demand, the more
supplies are required to be generated to bridge the gap created. In the process, the economy
grows because industries, whether the food processing industries or the medical supplies and
the textile industries, all grow further. All this growth impacts the economy positively,
making these strict policies mean doom for the same economy.
Additionally, immigrants provide labour for the US industries. America is at a point of
rapid industrial extension. The cost of labour might not always be easily met, but more access
to cheap labour is guaranteed with more immigrants, which is a positive thing for us as a
country and as a region. Finally, Money, J. (2019) notes that "More than 40% of the medical
scientists in the US are born in foreign countries.” Also, about 42% of web developers in the
United States were not born in the US but are immigrants (Money, 2019). These figures
should communicate the instrumental and critical position that immigrants occupy in the
economy of the US. If these harsh policies had been existent sometime back, it means we
would not have had these researchers and developers in America. Having strict immigration
policies today can be equated to shunning off potential researchers and potential web
developers of future America. The present ones will not be here forever. Over time, they are
bound to leave, but the benefits we have reaped as a country are immense. Therefore, there
are more negative effects of harsh immigration policies on Americans than immigrants.JOURNAL 2 4
However, illegal immigration should be discouraged. As we have immigrants come
in, they do so by following the laid down procedures and manageable policies and not those
that make it almost impossible for them to come.JOURNAL 2 5
