Individual Report:
Summary
1. Imagine you can treat heat as a reactant or a product of a reaction. What do the
observations about the temperature dependence in parts C and D tell you about the
change in these two reactions. I.E. Is heat a product or a reactant for these reactions,
and what does that say about whether they are endo or exothermic?
2. Write a brief paragraph that distinguishes between a reaction that goes to completion
and one that reaches equilibrium. Your paragraph should include all the following
terms, used appropriately – reversible, limiting reagent, excess reagent, can occur in
an open system, can occur in a closed system, and rates of reaction.
Group Report
Part A: Mg/HCl
1. Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction between Mg and HCl,
including phases.
2. When you added the first drop of HCl (part A, step 2), what was the limiting reagent?
Explain how you know.
3. Include a copy of Diagram 1 and Diagram 2 from Part A of the procedure and
describe the differences between the two diagrams. Explain the reason (what
chemistry was occurring) for why you drew them the way you did.
4. When you had added enough HCl to completely dissolve the Mg, the system had
gone to completion. How do your visual observations support this?
5. Include a drawing of the reaction progress diagram for the reaction between Mg and
HCl, with one curve for Mg(s), another for HCl(aq), and one for the products
(Mg2+(aq), H2(g) and Cl−(aq)). You can copy your notebook sketch neatly, or you can
make a copy of this Google Drawing figure and extend it (you will need a google
account to make a copy of and edit the drawing). Make sure each curve is clearly
labeled. The reaction progress diagram should show four stages of the reaction (make
sure to label the stages on your diagram, either with descriptions of the stages or the
corresponding lowercase roman numeral):
i. The beginning of step 3, when Mg metal and HCl are first combined but
before they start to react.
ii. when Mg metal and HCl are reacting with each other
iii. when another piece of Mg metal is added
iv. when the added piece of Mg metal is reacted completely with HCl
Part C: CoCl42−
12. The Part C reaction ([Co(H2O)6]2+ and CoCl4 2-) demonstrates shifts in an equilibrium
caused by changes to the system. Analyze how the equilibrium state of this reaction
reacts to one of the following changes to the reaction mixture:
a. increase in temperature
b. decrease in temperature
c. increase in concentration of a species
d. decrease in concentration of a species
Describe the effect of one change from the list of (a) – (d) above on the system,
supporting your answers with a description of visual observations.
