Causes of Immigration and Objection Discussion
Week 1 Discussion
Nichole Eberhard Need Student replyWhat are the most important reasons for such migration today? And what are the objections (cultural or otherwise) to high immigration? For example, are the objections to immigrants solely based on ethnocentrism? One reason for migrations today can be escaping from conflict, natural disasters, or persecution, and the main reason being that people are looking for “better economic prospects for themselves or their families” (World 101, n.d.). It has also been noted that within the last thirty years international migration rose to 80 percent, and one third of the migrants come from only ten countries (World 101, n.d.). However, there are those who are against the immigration of people. Some common arguments that are anti-immigration include taking the side of “American workers” and making sure they are employed first, against cheap labor, loose border security causes “violence”, and against undoccumented immigration (ADL, n.d.). Cite one specific example of such migration, such as from Mexico to the USA, or from Syria to Europe, for example. Be specific and cite your references. One example of migration seen today is because of the Ukraine war. This war has caused “the fastest mass migration in Europe in at least three decades” (Kingsley, 2022). The people who fled the war were mainly women, and children, which led to a total of approximately 660,000 people escaping within five days after the Russian attack (Kingsley, 2022). Most people are escaping to European countries, causing the border checkpoints of Poland, Moldova, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania to have 24 hour long lines (Kingsley, 2022). Imagine that you are a high school counselor in the USA. What are some cultural differences that might cause social friction or learning difficulties for high school age immigrants from the country you selected. One role I believe I would have to take as a high school counselor for students escaping war, would be to help them cope with those terrors they have witnessed and adjust back to their lives as students. It has been noted by March 3rd of this year, that seven Ukrainian children have been killed through the violence displayed between Ukraine and Russia, and several more have been injured or witnessed others getting injured or worse killed (Kekatos, 2022). Even if not faced with violence first hand, numerous children have had to experience “hiding in bomb shelters, basements, metro stations and other underground areas while others have fled their homes for neighboring countries” (Kekatos, 2022). This can lead to mental health risks for children. For example, some children “may be more agitated, they may be harder to calm down, just more unsettled” and some studies state “some children in these circumstances tend to be more withdrawn, they're not crying as much, they're not demanding much attention” (Kekatos, 2022). To be able to help them adjust to their new lives in a foriegn country can already be stressful enough, yet these children and adolescents are faced with the extra burden from violence they witnessed or experienced. It is important for counselors to keep that in mind and while working with them. References ADL. (n.d.). Anti-Immigrant Arguments Against Immigration Reform. ADL.
